Guy Fawdes Day(Bonfire Night) - 5th November

Guy Fawkes Day dates back to the failed 1605 attempt by a group of English Catholics (among them Guy Fawkes) to assassinate King James I of England and blow up the Houses of Parliament. Today, Guy Fawkes Day  also known as Bonfire Night is marked across the UK and New Zealand by letting off fireworks.Guy Fawkes was subsequently tried as a traitor with his co-conspirators for plotting against the government. He was sentenced to death by the most horrible form of execution. He was to be hung ,drawn and quartered- - which showed the serious nature of the crime of treason.

When the news of the plot and the threat to the king became public, bonfires were lit all through the country to celebrate the king’s safety. This was continued on the anniversary to emphasise the seriousness of the crime of treason. (Info on Guy Fawdes Day was extracted from the internet)

Fireworks were banned in Singapore a few decades ago. I was very surprised that they were available freely everywhere in New Zealand for Guy Fawdes Day...some of the fireworks that were let off were quite powerful one just like the fireworks which we had in Singapore during  National Day. There were no regulation on this in New Zealand unlike Singapore. Tony was nice and got me 2 packets of small fireworks to let go as he was amused by my excitement on Fireworks...
